Lantern Walk – Grades 1 & 2, 4:30pm

November 16 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

This event is for RVWS students from nursery through 2nd grade, together with a parent. St. Martin’s Day (Martinmas), or Lanternlaufen, is a tradition preserved in Waldorf schools around the world with an annual lantern walk. Tied to the legend of Martin of Tours, a French soldier who gave half of his cloak to warm a beggar in need, the event includes walking through the school grounds along a path lit by luminaries. The children sing songs about St. Martin, about lanterns or about the autumn as they walk along, carrying lanterns they have made in class. The Lantern Walk is hushed (aside from singing), and reverent, but not at all somber. It is a beautiful procession of lights in the dusk of the evening symbolizing the turn of the season and the carrying of inner light into the darker months of the year. Please refer to communications from your class teacher for specific instructions.
