Foreign Language
Two foreign languages are taught to all our students beginning in the first grade. The intention is to teach languages which come from two different roots. Our program currently includes Spanish and German. From a pedagogical standpoint, teaching two languages strengthens the child’s understanding of the mechanics of language while enriching their grasp of the underlying meanings evoked by multiple vocabularies. Teaching foreign languages also provides valuable opportunities for enriching children's lives with a direct experience of cultural diversity.
Beginning in grade one, foreign languages are largely taught in a choral manner with call and response being the primary teaching mechanism. The children experience foreign culture through songs, verses, stories and games. The written language and its grammar are introduced in third grade and culminate in reading, writing and conversation in the middle school years.
